Diary Entry written on mat-
Title: He Said He Loved Me-"I’m goin’
mad, ya know; and it’s driving me to the drink. He said
he loved me, and that he’d call me. But he never called.
Perhaps I prattled on too much at dinner. Maybe I shouldn't’t
have plunged into bowels of drunkenness and frolicked on the
bar. But, no matter. If a man were to do that, they’d
call him a rogue, and every woman within a hundred miles would
be after him, wantin’ to save him, makin’ him change
his ways, becoming domestic complicity acceptable to society.
Women find that attractive you know, part of a ubiquitous existence
known to all womankinds, to “save” another soul.
Never mind, that they may not wantin’ to be saved. Like
he’s damaged, but repairable. Admired and idolized by
both men and women for his unprincipled behavior. But let a
woman do the same, and she is a drunkard, not fit to possess
the body she inhabits and peregrinate the earth. Deemed unvirtuous,
otiose and soundly rejected. Oh woe is me, have I come to that?
Do you think I should call him? I’m goin’ mad, ya
know; and it’s driving me to the drink."
